Meet the Governors

  • Welcome to the Governors’ section

All governance boards, no matter what type of school have three core functions:

    • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
    • Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff, and
    • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent

Effective governance is based on six recognised key features:

    • Strategic leadership that sets and champions vision, ethos and strategy
    • Accountability that drives up educational standards and financial performance
    • People with the right skills, experience, qualities and capacity
    • Structures that reinforce clearly defined roles and responsibilities
    • Compliance with statutory and contractual requirements
    • Evaluation to monitor and improve the quality and impact of governance

The Governing Body of Fen Drayton Primary School comprises of 12 Governors:

    • One LA Governor - nominated by the Local Authority
    • Four Parent Governors - elected by the parent body
    • Five Co-opted Governors - members of the local community, nominated from community organisations or by other governors
    • One staff Governor - elected by the staff
    • Headteacher (who can choose to be a governor or not)

Governors can serve for up to four years before being re-elected.

Upon joining the Governing Board, governors are allocated to one of two sub-committees which meets every half term. These Committees have particular terms of reference and delegated responsibilities for key areas of the school.

The Curriculum and Learning Committee (C&L)

    • Provides strategic direction on all matters relating to pupil’s education and social well-being and ensuring standards of attainment and progress are made
    • Ensures the school’s responsibilities to delivering the national curriculum are met
    • Monitors the needs of SEN children and those with additional needs

The Resources and Infrastructure Committee (R&I)

    • Provides strategic direction all matters relating to the school budget
    • Oversees the school’s asset management, making recommendations on the upkeep and development of the school infrastructure
    • Monitors that the school adheres to Health and Safety legislation and guidance
    • Forms the Pay Review Committee making recommendations for staff pay awards and also the Review Appeals Committee if required

In 2019-20, The Governing Board at Fen Drayton also agreed the benefits of creating a third HR sub-committee. Plans to initiate this are temporarily on hold until school and governor operations are back to normal after the Covid-19 lockdown.

    The HR Committee (HR) will:

    • Provide strategic direction on the implementation of HR policies, ensuring any decision with a financial implication is made subject to the approval of the governing body
    • Review all HR policies including the non-financial elements of pay/appraisal policies
    • Monitor staff training and ensuring staff wellbeing is prioritised and maintained

In addition to our main committees, delegated governors also participate in the following:

    • Health and Safety at Work Committee: Ensuring the school meets all regulatory requirements in relation to Health and Safety at work legislation.
    • Head Teacher Appraisal Review Committee (HTPR)

And can be called upon to form any of the following panels when required:

    • Disciplinary Standing Committee (Staff Discipline)
    • Disciplinary Appeals Committee (Staff Appeals)
    • Pupil Discipline - Exclusion Appeals (Pupil Discipline)

The work and actions of the sub-committees are reported to all governors at the half-termly meetings of the Full Governing Body or FGB, ensuring we monitor progress against and continue to strive towards our strategic goals:

    • To support children to make good progress
    • To continue to provide a broad and enriched curriculum
    • To prioritise excellence in staffing
    • To make the Fen Drayton Primary School experience a valuable one for all community members
    • To continue strong and responsible financial management
    • To engage with other local schools

The Agenda section contains copies of the agendas for all meetings. Please note that due to the size of the school, minutes of the meetings are not made public in the interest of protecting anonymity. Details of attendance at meetings is provided.

Please find below details of how our Governing body is structured, including the names, categories, responsibilities and terms of appointment for each Governor.

We have also provided a Register of Governor Interests for your information.
