Swallows
Our KS1 class (Years 1&2) are taught by Mrs Clarke and Mrs Ashton. Swallows share the outdoor learning space with Ducklings and enjoy the opportunity to extend their learning through continuous provision opportunities.
Our Autumn 2 Topic is 'A Grand Day Out' See our Autumn 2 Topic overview here.
Fire of London Experience
We had a great day with 'Those History People' helping us learn about 'The Great Fire of London' as an introduction to our London's Burning topic. Children stepped back in time to the early hours of September 2nd 1666 where a small fire broke out in a small bakery on Pudding Lane. They were guided round the city participating in activities such as soap making, candle making and writing with a quill and ink. In the afternoon, children took part in an archaeological investigation. Lots of fun was had by all and the costumes were all brilliant!

Norris Museum Visit
We went to the Norris Museum to learn about 'Toys through Time'. We listened to a story about toys in the museum and then had time to explore old and new toys. We made our own kaleidoscopes and we looked at the materials toys were made of and how they have changed through time. We even had a ride back to school on a double decker bus!
Phonics and Reading
We follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised 2021 scheme for teaching phonics in Y1. The scheme matches the 'Big Cat' books we use in Guided Reading. The children also bring home a free choice that the choose themselves that matches the level they are reading at.
Some children in Y2 will still be accessing Little Wandle phonics and Big Cat books.

These three videos show you how to pronounce the sounds. Notice how the children don’t add an ‘uh’ sound at the end, so they say: ‘t’ not ‘tuh’. Use the downloadable information to help your child remember how to write their letters and say their sounds.
